Nickel Alloy 400
Specs: QQ-N-281, ASTM-B164, AMS 4675, ASME SB164
UNS# NO4400
Nickel 400 is a high-Nickel alloy consisting of at least 63% Nickel alloyed with Copper, some Iron, and other trace elements. This material is valued by many industries for its combination of high strength and corrosion resistance over a wide range of conditions and temperatures. Even when cooled to -423.17°F, Nickel Alloy 400 does not become brittle like many ferrous materials. Similarly, Nickel 400 retains many of its physical properties at high temperatures. While tensile strength lessened at temperatures over 700°F, yield strength and elongation are only marginally reduced.
Marine and chemical processing applications for our Nickel Alloy 400 capitalize on the high corrosion resistance of this alloy and include piping systems, pump shafts, seawater valves, anchor cables, springs, heat exchangers, propeller shafts and fuel tanks.
Details
Nickel 400 is a solid solution alloy of Nickel and Copper (67% Ni, 23% Cu) which has outstanding corrosion resistance with extremely good mechanical properties even at cryogenic temperatures.
This alloy can be hardened by cold work, has good weldability, and has excellent corrosion resistance in rapid flowing brackish or seawater.
It is resistant to stress corrosion cracking, which gives the Nickel Alloy 400 a wide range of potential applications in chemical and saltwater environments.
The alloy can be used in non-oxidizing chloride solutions and is resistant to de-aerated hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids.
It is not recommended in oxidizing acids such as nitric and ammonia containing systems, due to the copper content of the alloy.
Nickel 400 can be used at elevated temperatures up to 1000ºF (538ºc) and has excellent mechanical properties down to -423 ºF (-253 ºc).
The alloy is approved for pressure vessels in accordance with the American ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel code up to temperatures of 900 ºF (480 ºc) and to the German Pressure Vessel specification VdÜV –WBl.263 from 14-800 ºF (-10-425 ºc).
Available shapes – round, hex, and rectangular
